Homes Under the Hammer is a BBC staple and follows different families as they transform their properties in a bid to sell them at a profit. All these TV shows could have been instrumental in driving consumer spending on home improvements as a result of living life under lockdown. Premiering in June 2022, Tim Allen and Richard Karn, teamed up with YouTuber DIYer April Wilkerson, on History Channel documentary series More Power; where the hosts cover the history of tools, again a la Tool Time from Home Improvement.

Featuring a star-studded cast including Ty Pennington, Paul DiMeo and Tracy Hutson, each episode follows the journey of a family facing hardship being sent away on the trip of a lifetime.

Coming in at the top spot is one of our absolute favourites - Escape to the Chateau. The Channel 4 documentary series follows couple Dick and Angel Strawbridge and their family through the challenges of renovating and redecorating a 19th-century castle in north-west France into their dream home. Coming in at number eight is daytime TV favourite, Peter Andre’s60 Minute Makeover. The show saw a team of experts challenged with redecorating several rooms in a house in just one hour. Cutting edge technology and innovative architects reveal the design dream ordinary houses could become. After all, famed designer and writer Kevin McCloud has been providing inspiration to DIY amateurs and architecture lovers for the past 20 years.

Grand Designs is actually one of the longest running home improvement TV show in the UK. One of our favourite episodes was the Children in Need Special back in November 2019, which saw Nick and the team embark on a truly challenging build for homeless young adults. In the first two years of the show, Pamela Anderson played the part of Tim's Tool Girl, Lisa, on Tool Time, but left the show to focus on her role on the syndicated series Baywatch. Her last episode as a series regular was "The Great Race", which aired on May 19, 1993. Tim's new assistant, electrician Heidi Keppert, played by Debbe Dunning, replaced Anderson as the Tool Time Girl for the following third season, starting with "Maybe Baby", which aired on September 15, 1993.

Presented by Nick Knowles, each heartwarming episode follows the personal story of a deserving family who need help building their dream home. An avid fan of the Detroit professional sports teams, Tim wears Lions, Pistons, Red Wings, and Tigers clothing in numerous instances, and many plots revolve around the teams. He is a former salesman for the fictional Binford Tool company, and he is very much a cocky, overambitious, accident-prone know-it-all.
Loved by both architecture-lovers and DIY amateurs alike, it's a feel-good show that even Hollywood actress Meryl Streep adores. During its eight-season run, the show always finished in the top 10 in the Nielsen ratings during a season, despite never making the #1 slot (its highest finish was a second-place spot in the show's third season; behind 60 Minutes). However, he was still busy with a movie that was in the middle of production at the time the first pilot was to be shot.
The makeovers typically went down a storm, though there were sometimes a few tears and tantrums along the way. The show is set to make a huge comeback in 2021, with Davina McCall confirmed as presenter for the re-boot. While most of us can only dream of designing and completing properties on this scale, it’s satisfying to watch a project go from ideas stage to completion all the same. UK’s home improvement firms have been experiencing a boom despite the ongoing lockdown, ever since the home makeover craze hit many work-from-home individuals.
