The right gingerbread techniques make the project SO much easier. We used disposable piping bags with two different tips for decorating our houses this year; a small round tip for detail and a small star tip for everything else. We used plant-based food coloring for the wreaths, candles, and house color.

Your email address will not be published. Re-roll the scraps so you have enough dough for the entire house. This house is approximately 7 inches tall with the chimney and 6 inches wide.
The Best Spicy Sweet Chili Sauce (Easy Recipe!)
As one of the most popular holiday cookie flavors, gingerbread's rich spices and warmth are a beloved choice for the season. As a holiday display, the gingerbread house is a cornerstone of festive traditions around the world. You have just made a new batch of gingerbread fresh from the oven. Now, the next steps in creating your gingerbread house is the design. Step 9Bake the small pieces of gingerbread for 10 minutes, or until golden brown and firm.

I piped 3D flower beds for the front of the house, and filled them with sprinkles too (can you tell that I love sprinkles?). The second type of royal icing will be a little thinner, and will be used to decorate the finer details on your gingerbread house. I use a guide that is about 5 – 6 mm thick for most of the dough. For smaller parts of the house (chimney, doors, window shutters), I use dough guide that is thinner, about 3 mm.
Remove the dough from the package and place it on your work surface (Image 22). I like to roll the dough out between two pieces of parchment paper, so I don’t have to use too much flour, but you can roll out the dough on a floured surface as well. The key to a sturdy gingerbread house is good gingerbread house icing and patience. It works best to put two pieces together, let them dry a little, and then add two more pieces. Allowing drying time between each step will make it very sturdy. This template was designed to be used with my gingerbread house recipe.
If you are working on this alone, it may help to grab some canned goods from the pantry and use the cans to help prop up the pieces while the icing mortar is drying. Pipe short lines of icing up the backs of the trees and on the backs of the gingerbread people. Position the trees and gingerbread people on the cake board, wedging them upright with the reserved triangular gingerbread supports. Cut the buttons to fit around the chimney, if necessary. Use icing to stick sweets along the roof ridge.

After printing, cut out each piece along the solid lines. The door on the front back piece doesn't need to be cut out of the pattern unless you want it cut out. Download and print this free pattern on card stock if you have it.
I use meringue powder so this makes it safer for anyone to eat. However, you can also use egg whites instead of meringue powder and water. This is such a key ingredient for a classic gingerbread dough! Make sure to use “fancy molasses”, as it has a sweet flavor with deep molassey and slightly acidic flavors. I use less cloves because I find ground cloves can easily overpower the gingerbread house flavors.
Remove dough scraps; cover and save to re-roll if needed. Take a basic gingerbread house to the next level with an edible sugar glass star and intricately piped icing decorations. Step 8Spoon one quarter of the icing into the small piping bag fitted with the writing nozzle. Spoon another quarter into the disposable piping bag.
Cut out the doors and windows from the template as well, and then keep all of template pieces ready to be used (Image 21). Place the dough in a ziploc bag, and spread the dough evenly inside while removing excess air. You can also wrap the dough in plastic wrap.
With lightly floured 1-inch round cutter, cut at least 120 circles to make shingles from dough, and transfer to large parchment-lined cookie sheet, spacing slightly apart. If necessary, reroll scraps, and continue with cutouts. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until firm in center; transfer parchment with cutouts to cooling rack to cool completely.
Ensure they're spaced at least an inch apart since they'll expand during baking. Cut out each piece of your printed pattern with sharp scissors. This includes the walls, roof panels, doors, windows, and any other elements you'd like to include. The gingerbread house is an iconic edible decoration.
Attempt to place both roof pieces on top at once so they rest against each other. Hold in place gently for a few minutes until the icing starts to set. Here, I used royal icing that was piped on top of each other to create 3D structures like these windowsill “baskets” and filled them with sprinkles.
Cover the remaining icing with a damp tea towel until needed. Heat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/350°F/Gas 4. Step 3Divide the warm dough into 3 equal pieces. Roll out each piece between 2 sheets of cling film until 5mm thick.
Bake cutouts 10 to 13 minutes or until firm in center; remove from oven. With cutouts on pan, carefully replace pattern pieces on top of baked dough cutouts, and trim around edges; discard any trimmings, and remove pattern pieces. (Pan and dough will be hot.) Return cutouts to oven 4 to 6 minutes longer or until dry and lightly browned. Transfer parchment with cutouts to rack to cool completely. Pipe icing along the base and ends of the side walls and stick these to the front of the house and cake board.
